Every other school district in Tucson has a higher override or multiple overrides that combined are much larger than Vail’s 12.5%. We believe our kids deserve as much as kids in Tucson Unified, Amphitheater, and Flowing Wells.

The basics

What is an Override?

An override is local voter authorization to fund the district above the state’s base level. By law it can only pay for staff and programs, never buildings or construction, and it is not a loan. Vail voters have approved a budget override continuously since 1993, more than 30 years.

Why vote again?

If we already have an override, why do we need to vote again?

State law requires that every override be put back in front of voters every five years.

This November’s vote simply continues the 12.5% override already in place, it does not raise the current tax rate.

What’s lost if it isn’t renewed?

If voters don’t reauthorize Prop 423, the countdown starts immediately. The funding phases out over two years and that means real, immediate cuts: staff reductions and the loss of electives and specialty programs, including gifted and advanced coursework, art, music, and PE. Class sizes go up.

There’s no version of this that doesn’t cost Vail kids something.

The override funds 172 teaching positions, including art, music, PE, gifted, and advanced course teachers. That is 20% of teaching positions in Vail. Class sizes will go up and programs will be lost next school year. We can’t let that happen.
